Getting To Rutherglen

From Melbourne: Rutherglen is about a 3-hour drive (approximately 300 km) northeast of Melbourne. Just hop onto the Hume Highway (M31) and follow the signs to Rutherglen.

From Sydney: If you’re travelling from Sydney, it’s about a 6.5-hour drive (around 600 km) southwest. Take the Hume Highway (M31) and enjoy the scenic drive through Victoria’s picturesque countryside.

The Rutherglen Gold Battery Walk is a fascinating journey at the back of the Rutherglen Visitor Information Centre. As you follow the Gold Battery sign, the path leads you along Hopetoun Road towards the historic Rutherglen wine bottle, a local landmark that adds charm to the trail.

This scenic walk, approximately four kilometres long, offers a glimpse into the region’s rich gold mining history. It includes a tribute to John Wallace, who named Rutherglen. The walk typically takes about an hour, but you’ll want to add extra time for the interesting stops and stunning views along the way!
