Is Khao Lak nicer than Phuket?

Phuket and Khao Lak are popular beach destinations in Thailand, yet they offer distinct experiences. Phuket, the larger and more developed of the two, boasts a vibrant nightlife, bustling streets, and a wide range of accommodation options and attractions. The island is known for its stunning beaches like Patong and Karon, where tourists can enjoy water sports, lounge on the sand, or indulge in beachside dining. On the other hand, Khao Lak offers a more laid-back and tranquil atmosphere, perfect for those seeking relaxation and tranquillity. The beaches in Khao Lak, like Bang Niang and Khao Lak Beach, are less crowded and provide a serene environment where visitors can enjoy breathtaking views. Khao Lak’s proximity to national parks, such as Khao Lak–Lam Ru National Park, allows you to explore lush jungles, trek through scenic trails, and embark on wildlife encounters. While Phuket caters to those looking for excitement and a vibrant scene, Khao Lak provides a peaceful and nature-oriented getaway.

Five of the best things to do at La Flora Khao Lak

1- Enjoy a sunset catamaran cruise.

Nothing is more romantic than a sunset (or is that just me?). Add beautiful scenery on a catamaran, and you have won the jackpot. Imagine this: “The golden sun descends upon the horizon, casting pink, orange, and purple colours across the ocean, along with breathtaking panoramic views of the stunning coastline. Sipping on a refreshing tropical cocktail, you unwind in the comfort of the catamaran’s deck, soaking in the beauty surrounding you.”  Have I set the scene for you? It is one for the bucket list!

2-Unwind with a massage at Floranica Spa

If you are heading to Khao Lak in the rainy season, then spending an afternoon being pampered indoors at La Flora Spa is the perfect solution to a rainy day. I highly recommend a Thai massage (you know the saying, when in Rome…). It is a way to get the kinks out of that overworked and stressed body. If that isn’t your thing, there are plenty of other options, for example, a coconut scrub or a Miracles Herb Facial Treatment.
I highly recommend one of the spa packages (great value for money, too). The 7-hour Perfect Day package includes a beautiful herbal steam, excellent coffee or coconut scrub, a decadent milk bath, a Thai and aroma massage, a soothing head massage, a facial of your choice, a manicure, pedicure and lunch.

3. Get your body moving with one of the many hotel activities

Start your morning with SUP yoga or bodyweight training (there are more options during the week, including Taichi, yoga and stretching classes). Slow movement is the best way to wake your body with an 815am class. However, private classes are offered in the morning if you need something to raise your heartbeat and have always wanted to try a bit of Thai boxing for a small charge.
It doesn’t stop there, as the afternoon has aqua aerobics, Taichi and yoga for those who would instead work out in the afternoon.

4 Splash around with many of the water sports

Suppose you seek an adventurous and refreshing experience during your visit to La Flora Khao Lak. In that case, this resort offers various exciting water sports activities for hire. Whether you are a thrill-seeker looking to ride the waves and try surfing or prefer a more laid-back adventure like kayaking along the scenic shores, there is something for everyone. With state-of-the-art equipment and experienced instructors, you can be assured of a safe and enjoyable water sports experience.

5 Enjoy a seafood dinner at Sire Restaurant

Indulge in a delightful seafood dinner for two. The romantic atmosphere sets the perfect tone for a memorable evening. The menu features fresh and succulent seafood options, ranging from grilled lobster and jumbo prawns to delicious muscles and tasty squid. The dishes are prepared with the utmost care, highlighting the natural flavours of the sea combined with the traditional Thai flavours. The seafood dinner also includes a variety of delectable sides, such as garlic butter, rice and roasted vegetables, enhancing the dining experience. After dinner, enjoy a cocktail (or two) with their many specials.

The Deluxe Pool Access Room Review

There are many rooms to choose from. However, I highly recommend the deluxe pool access room, ideally located near the main pool and beach but with a balcony with access to our little pool. The room is also close to the spa and gym, so the location is perfect. This open room concept had a king-size bed, lounge, and study area, along with a spa bath, where when the bi-folds were folded out, you could look straight out into the deck.
All rooms have coffee and tea facilities, a bar fridge, a safe, a hairdryer and toiletries. A robe, slippers, umbrella, beach bag and beach towels were also provided, along with a card to hand in for a beach towel for the pool area. Check availability for La Flora Khao Lak here.

So 17 years ago, my husband and I set off with our little family in tow, embarking on a short-term assignment in Taiwan. Although without any knowledge of expat life or the Taiwanese culture, we took the chance and decided this would be an exciting little adventure; little did we know it changed the direction of our lives forever.
