Most people arrive in Bali and head straight for Seminyak or Ubud. And honestly? Fair enough. But if you’ve already done those, or you’re simply craving something quieter — something genuinely different — head north. Specifically, to the mist-covered shores of Lake Buyan, where a brand-new property has just opened that I think belongs on every serious Bali traveller’s radar.
Buyan Lakeside Villas sits at 1,300 metres above sea level in Pancasari village, about 2.5 hours from Ngurah Rai International Airport. Arrange a private driver for the journey — Bali driver/transfer. The altitude brings temperatures between 11.5°C and 24°C year-round — cool mornings, fresh mountain air and none of that sticky coastal heat.

Five Villas, Total Privacy
In This Guide
There are just five private villas here — and that’s exactly the point. Four are one-bedroom villas (Sumba, Ulun Danu, Minang and Waerebo), each a generous 80 square metres with private balconies perfectly positioned for watching the mist roll in over the lake. The two-bedroom Toraja stretches to 160 square metres with its own living and dining room — brilliant for families or if you simply want the space. Every villa includes a stocked pantry, fast fibre Wi-Fi, daily housekeeping and in-villa Balinese massages on request. → Check availability and book directly at Buyan Lakeside Villas
The 15-metre heated pool overlooking the lake is worth the trip alone. Meanwhile, Pepper Lane Café — named after the local pepper plantations lining the road — serves up fresh, locally sourced Western and Asian dishes alongside excellent coffee.

Sacred Lake, Slow Travel
Lake Buyan is one of Bali’s four sacred lakes, formed inside an ancient volcanic caldera. There are no motorised boats here. No tourist queues. Just still water, protected forest, and the kind of calm that’s genuinely hard to find on this island anymore.
From the villas, you can walk the Twin Lake Rainforest Track — a 2-to-3-hour jungle trail linking Lake Buyan with Lake Tamblingan, passing hidden temples along the way. Nearby, the spectacular Pura Ulun Danu Beratan water temple is only 15 minutes by car, the iconic Handara Gate is worth a stop, and Banyumala Twin Waterfalls make for a lovely morning hike. Frequently Asked Questions
Is North Bali worth visiting instead of the south? Absolutely — especially if crowds and heat aren’t your thing. North Bali moves at a different pace entirely. You’ll find fewer tourists, cooler temperatures and far more authentic cultural experiences. The highland area around Lake Buyan is particularly special for its sacred lakes, rainforest trails and unspoiled villages.
What is special about Lake Buyan in Bali? Lake Buyan is one of only four sacred lakes in Bali and sits inside an ancient volcanic caldera at over 1,000 metres elevation. It has no motorised boats, is surrounded by protected forest, and holds significant spiritual importance for the Balinese. It’s genuinely one of the most peaceful spots on the island.
When is the best time to visit Buyan Lakeside Villas? The good news is the highland climate stays comfortable year-round — between 11.5°C and 24°C — so there’s no bad time to visit. The dry season (April to October) brings clearer skies and better hiking conditions, but even during wetter months the misty lakeside atmosphere has its own particular magic.
