LAS VEGAS, NEVADA

When you think of Las Vegas, let’s be honest, we think of boys’ weekends and bachelorette parties. But I can tell you first-hand that there is more to Las Vegas than just Casino and pool parties, so instead of heading to places like Hawaii with your children this year, try spending time in a place where there are loads of fun things to do, yes that is Las Vegas with kids.

Things to know before you go to Las Vegas

Visa

You must apply for a USA ESTA if you are not a US citizen. You can do that by checking out the ivisa website and applying online. It is as easy as that!

Insurance

SafetyWing is the world’s first International Travel Medical Insurance developed to meet the needs of entrepreneurs and remote workers travelling or living abroad worldwide. I can not recommend travel medical insurance enough! For those who will be away for long periods, live and work abroad or are nomad travellers.

Weather

March to May or September to November is because the shoulder season offers the most moderate weather. With August being, on average, the most rainfall. Winter can drop down as low as -2C and reach as high as 41C in the summer during the day.

Go Las Vegas Card

I highly recommend the Go Las Vegas Card because some of the benefits are there are 34+ attractions to choose from, as well as one premium attraction of your choice. In some attractions, you can skip the line or get early entry, discounts on eateries and free audio tours on offer.

Hotel recommendation in Las Vegas with kids

Splurge – The Bellagio

There is so much to love about the Bellagio Hotel, from the extravagance of the hotel room and the sensationalism of the fountain to the convenient location. If you were to stay at the Bellagio for the weekend, you wouldn’t need to leave the hotel.

Budget – Flamingo Las Vegas

The Flamingo Las Vegas is in a fabulous location for an affordable price. Originally named The Flamingo Hotel & Casino, which opened in 1946 by the then-notorious mobster Bugsy Siegel. The Flamingo was one of the first casino and hotel properties on what would become the Las Vegas Strip.

Nothing screams Las Vegas more than the iconic Bellagio Fountain. Watch the Bellagio Fountain come to life with the Bellagio Water Show; see the times below:

(every 15 minutes) 7 pm to midnight.

Watch them feed the flamingos at the Flamingo Wildlife Habitat

Not everything in Las Vegas with kids costs money. Head over to the family-friendly Flamingo Wildlife Habitat on the grounds of the Flamingo Las Vegas; there are many free things to do. The opening hours are from dusk to dawn, with the daily Pelican feeding times being 8:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.

See the famous Cirque du Soleil in Las Vegas with kids.

Las Vegas isn’t Las Vegas without watching a show, and why not see the world-class, kid-friendly Cirque du Soleil? You can not help but be dazzled by the performance as you become memorised on a journey you will be discussing for years.

Dare to ride the roller coaster in New York, New York

If your child is 13 years and above, why not dare to ride the roller coaster in New York, New York? Be warned: this rollercoaster is not for the faint-hearted. Remember that the opening times are as follows:

Sunday – Thursday 11:00 am – 11:00 pm.

Friday – Saturday 10:30 am – Midnight

See real-life Lions at MGM Casino.

Where else would you see real-life lions than in Las Vegas? The Lion Habitat Ranch is in the MGM Casino, and you can buy tickets online or at the Lion Habitat Ranch. Operating hours differ with seasons, so check the website before your visit. Why not surprise the kids with a behind-the-scenes tour of the Lion Habitat Ranch, then give them a treat they will remember forever?

Spend the day at the Grand Canyon.

Yes, you heard right, you can spend the day at the Grand Canyon. For most, the Grand Canyon is a bucket list item for adults and children. Spend the day driving by coach (stopping at Hoover Dam on the way) or flying via helicopter. Either way, this is a must-do activity in Las Vegas with kids.

Feed the stingrays at the Shark Reef Aquarium.

Visit Mandalay Resort and Casino and enter the world of sea animals at the Shark Reef Aquarium. The aquarium will entertain you and the kids for hours, learning a thing or two about marine life, and you will also get the opportunity to feed a few different types of sea animals.

Be serenaded by gondoliers at the Venetian Resort Hotel

If you haven’t been to Venice and experienced a Gondola ride, the next best thing is to be serenaded by a gondolier at the Venetian Resort Hotel. Ride the gondola through the makeshift canals of a look-alike Venice. It may seem a little tacky, but they love it when the kids are in Las Vegas.

Feel like you are under the big tent at Circus Circus.

Check out online the list of performances at Circus Circus. These performances are all free and will have you and the kids entertained for hours. See high-flying trapeze and jugglers perform as you watch in amazement. If you want to take a break and get amongst all the action, check out Midway. Circus-style games will make you believe that you are under the big tent.

Take a photo under the “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign

The Welcome to Las Vegas sign must be among the world’s most sought-after images. This iconic landmark has appeared in millions of people’s photo albums since the 1960s. You haven’t been to Las Vegas unless you have taken a photo of this sign.

So 17 years ago, my husband and I set off with our little family in tow, embarking on a short-term assignment in Taiwan. Although without any knowledge of expat life or the Taiwanese culture, we took the chance and decided this would be an exciting little adventure; little did we know it changed the direction of our lives forever.
