Things to do on your weekend stay in Hyams Beach

Visit a winery or two.

I have to admit; I didn’t even know that Shoalhaven coast wine was a thing. Also, because I haven’t been to this part of New South Wales in about twenty years, I wasn’t aware that there are newly established wineries in the area. So I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised that the Shoalhaven area is not just about sunny weather and sandy beaches.

Coolangatta Estate

The first grapes on the South Coast region of NSW were planted here by Alexander Berry, but it was not until the 1980s that Greg Bishop re-establish vineyards on the site. Book in for a wine tasting at 1335 Bolong Road, Coolangatta NSW 2535, between 7.30 am to 5.00 pm daily.

Two Figs Winery

One of the newest wineries in the region, Two Figs Winery, was established in 2003 by Shayne and Alison Bricker. They may not have the history to boast about, but they do have 5000 cases of wine that they make yearly.

Recommendation: Book ahead of time to either of the venues to avoid disappointment.

Enjoy a Dolphin Cruise in Huskinson

What better way to get up close and personal with such beautiful creatures than with a 1.5-hour cruise with knowledgeable tour guides?

Recommendation Bring warm clothes because it can be cold even in the summer months.

See Whales close up

Recommendation There is no food onboard, so stock up at the cafe, where you can buy snacks and drinks.

Go white sandy beach hopping.

You will need a car to enter the Booderee National Park, and for a small fee, you get to visit any or all of the beaches in the area.

Hyams Beach

Enjoy lunch with a view.

The Huskinssons hotel has fresh produce, beautiful views and a great atmosphere at an affordable price. Spend lunch or early evening sipping a cold beer and enjoying the local seafood favourites while overlooking the calm waters of Huskisson.

Although the original hotel goes as far back as 1895, when the Cambourn Family built the Jervis Bay hotel; however, it wasn’t until 1932 when the iconic Huskinson Hotel premises of 75 Owen St, Huskisson, were constructed and named “husky pub” by locals.

Accommodation

Romantic weekend

The Hyams Beach Seaside Cottage

These beautifully quaint little refurbished accommodations are one-bedroom suites with a bathroom and tiny kitchen (well, it has an electric frypan and microwave) and shared use of a BBQ area out the back under a beautiful leafy area.

Recommendation – purchase your groceries nearby in nearby Vincentia, and spend a night or indulge yourself in a homemade breakfast for two.

Family Friendly

Scarborough Hyams Beach

Go for dinner at the nearby location of Vincentia, or spend the night preparing your homemade meal. Either way, this location is perfect for your family-friendly vacation.

Recommendation: There are no local delivery services in the area, and the only cafe in Hyams closes early, so prepare your dinner choices in advance.

So 17 years ago, my husband and I set off with our little family in tow, embarking on a short-term assignment in Taiwan. Although without any knowledge of expat life or the Taiwanese culture, we took the chance and decided this would be an exciting little adventure; little did we know it changed the direction of our lives forever.
