Why Nîmes Deserves Your Attention

A Brief History: The Roman Connection

Founded around 50 BCE and named after a sacred spring, Nîmes flourished under Roman rule. Emperor Augustus showered particular favour upon the city in the 1st century, transforming it into a prosperous Roman colony. The impressive monuments built during this golden age have survived remarkably intact, offering visitors a genuine glimpse into life during the Roman Empire.

When to Visit: Timing Your Trip

The ideal time to visit Nîmes is during the spring (April-June) or autumn (September-October), when temperatures are pleasantly warm without the scorching heat of summer. These shoulder seasons also mean fewer tourists and more reasonable accommodation prices. If you can brave the heat, summer brings vibrant festivals, including the famous Ferias, which fill the ancient arena with life and celebration.

Getting There: From Airport to City Centre

Nîmes is conveniently located in the Gard department, with several travel options:

  • From Nîmes-Alès-Camargue-Cévennes Airport: The airport is 9km from the city centre. Take the airport shuttle bus (runs according to flight schedules) directly to the train station for about €6. The journey takes approximately 25 minutes. Or secure a private transfer (especially when you are arriving during the early hours of the morning, as taxis can be expensive)

Must-See Roman Wonders

Maison Carrée: Perhaps the most perfectly preserved Roman temple anywhere in the world, this 1st-century architectural marvel stands in the heart of the city. Its elegant columns and perfect proportions make it easy to understand why Thomas Jefferson used it as the model for the Virginia State Capitol.

Tour Magne: Climb this ancient Roman tower atop the highest hill in Nîmes for breathtaking panoramic views across the city and the surrounding countryside. Once part of the city’s defensive walls, it’s now the perfect spot for sunset photographs.

Jardins de la Fontaine: These elegant 18th-century gardens were built around the original Roman spring that named the city. Explore the romantic paths, ancient ruins, and the Temple of Diana hidden among the greenery.
