Sugarhall has reopened its doors and here is why you need to try it.

If you have not been in Singapore for very long, you may not have heard of Sugarhall as it sadly closed its doors four years ago; however, to our great delight, it has reopened its doors to Singapore once again; here is why you need to try it.

Sugarhall: Jigger and Pony group’s beloved bar is what I would describe as a Singaporean rum-focused cocktail pub. Confused? Don’t be because although this pub is unique, it has exciting new drinks with a whole lot of atmosphere that comes along with it. If you think you don’t like rum, well, think again! Sugarhall will have you wondering why you stayed away from rum for all these years (trust me, I have done the same!).

Once upon a time, Sugarhall was found in a shophouse on Amoy Street, but now it has opened its doors on 28 February and is located at 19 Cecil Street Singapore; the closest MRT is Raffles Place, right in the middle of downtown. Do not be surprised if you walk past the unassuming door a few times (I know I did), but what awaits you upstairs is well worth the confusion.

Once you reach the entrance, you will realise the uniqueness of what is inside, a blend of a rum cocktail bar and a Singapore pub all rolled into one. The warm greeting from the staff feels like you are arriving back at an old friend’s home; you know that feeling you get when you sit down, take off your jacket and start to unwind with a good drink in your hand and a familiar friendly smile?

What Bar Operations Manager Davide Boncimino and Principal Bartender Sam Loh have brought to Singapore is a fantastic selection of rum-based cocktails; combining that with Chef David Tang’s spin on pub food makes Sugarhall a pretty unique place to try out.

Opening hours are Wednesday to Sunday from 4.00 pm to 10.30 pm, with happy hour running from 4 pm – 6 pm daily, and once the happy hour is over, the fairy lights on the roof turn off, and the room becomes moody and intimate. So arrive early because if you do, you can take advantage of cocktails at $14 that rotate monthly, Sugarhall Sorachi Ace Lager and wines by the glass at $12.

With so many cocktails to choose from the menu, it is hard to pick just one, so I will help you out a little with some recommendations;

My favourite drinks to try at Sugarhall

For Something fresh to start the night – Try the Mango Colada.

This little gem fits right in on the little red dot. The blended house-made sorbet (yes, you heard right) has coconut water, Chalong Bay sweet Thai basil rum and a hint of coconut cream. I feel like I should be sitting on a beach in the tropics; I think hot steamy night, perfect for Singapore weather, and it is the ideal way to start your night at Sugar Hill.

You can not go past – Dark and Stormy.

I love their take on this original cocktail with 8-year-old Hampden Overproof rum, which has notes of pineapple to give that tropical feel, lime juice and “I Shot the Ginger” ginger beer (which has a story of its own) that has been brewed in collaboration with The 1925 Brewing Co. A great drink to keep you going for a night of fun with friends. Try the mega stormy ($50)

For a little bit of fun, try – IL-Presidente.

The name change of this little Cuban classic is because of its Italian twist. Think Sherry vermouth, Amaro Montenegro, Marsala (a fortified wine from Sicily) and a moderately oaky 15 years-old cask rum by Appleton. So sit back, relax and enjoy the notes that come through; this will have you appreciating the entire experience of Sugarhall’s ambience.

If rum is not your thing, I highly recommend – Pommy’s Margarita.

I love a traditional Margarita; however, if I was going to change it around, this is precisely how I would do it as it fits right in here in South East Asia. With an apple pun of the Tommy’s Margarita variant, calvados-fortified Pommeau from Normandie, and agave nectar. And what makes it even more remarkable is that hint of cinnamon, a sour plum salt rim, and just like that! You are in heaven.

For rum lovers (and the newly converted rum ones), Sugarhall has a Rum of the Month, introducing premium rums to its customers. Combine this with Sugarhall’s pub food, which has a fine-dining flair. Influenced mainly by chef David Tang’s own experiences of his best nights out in LA and follows his own philosophy of great food done right. So, for example, try the Orange Fried chicken (inspired by a popular Chinese dish in America) or Sugarhall’s take on the cheeseburger (think dry-aged beef patty and smoked bacon).

    So 17 years ago, my husband and I set off with our little family in tow, embarking on a short-term assignment in Taiwan. Although without any knowledge of expat life or the Taiwanese culture, we took the chance and decided this would be an exciting little adventure; little did we know it changed the direction of our lives forever.
