Exciting things to do in Singapore

Try your hand at silk painting with Thistle Crafts Singapore.

If you have not heard of silk painting, then you are not alone; before discovering my love of the craft, I had never even heard of it! I was sceptical at first because my craft skills are less than average, but somehow I found the art of painting on silk (with a lot of help from the talented instructor Kerry) both relaxing and rewarding! I can not wait for my next class at Thistle Crafts Singapore.

Spend the day in Little India.

I know you have probably visited Little India a million times, but have you spent the day exploring? Visit the many murals dotted around the area, learn about the area’s history at “The Indian Heritage Centre,” go shopping at Mustafa, and finish off with a great meal at The Meatsmith.

Perfect your game of golf at Holey Moley.

You may not be Tiger Woods, but that’s okay because the best part about Holey Moley golf is that it doesn’t even matter if you have never played a game in your life. It is all about the giggles; try your hand at nine holes, 18 holes, or 27 holes; it is up to you. Remember that children under 18 can only play until 8 pm; evenings are reserved for adults only!

Explore the history of Fort Canning Park.

Fort Canning Park is more than just a great walking trail. Most people will have walked through the park, around the park, and through the park and will have never stopped to enjoy the history within the park. There is plenty to do here, from visiting Battlebox to checking out the replica of Raffles house. Fort Canning Park is full of treasures to be explored.

Join one of the NUS Baba House Heritage Tours.

We all know Singapore is a melting pot of cultural history, making it a unique part of Asia. The Baba House is an exciting look into the history of the Peranakan people. In particular, this Peranakan house is full of original artefacts and photos from many years ago. The guided tour is full of interesting facts that will take you through the original home of a Peranakan family.

Learn how to make your own candles at Sallys Room.

If you are like me and spend loads of money on candles (yep, I go through at least three a week, gulp!) but have always wanted to learn how to make your own, this is the best place to start. Sally’s Room has a workshop for everyone; whether you are a novice (like me) or need a more advanced workshop, Sally’s Room has it all.

Watch a show at The Wild Rice Theatre.

Wild Rice Theatre is different from other theatre venues in Singapore; in other words, you will not find plays like this anywhere else. Not for the faint-hearted or the more conservative at heart, but more for the quirky and open-minded, to be honest. So if you want to be a little more daring and watch something a little more raw and spirited, book a ticket to one of their latest plays here.

There is no better way to bring a little colour into your home than a new arrangement of flowers! If you are like me, find yourself with fresh arrangements weekly, and don’t have a florist’s natural gift, this workshop is fun and interactive. Want more information? So 17 years ago, my husband and I set off with our little family in tow, embarking on a short-term assignment in Taiwan. Although without any knowledge of expat life or the Taiwanese culture, we took the chance and decided this would be an exciting little adventure; little did we know it changed the direction of our lives forever.
